![]() When you get paid every two weeks, the period is bi weekly (two-weeks), and the frequency is one per two weeks or one half per week, so it doesn't make a lot of sense in the context of paychecks ("I get paid a half per week!" doesn't work well). Or we can talk about frequency (twice per month). So when talking about period as above, we say semimonthly (half month). So my pay schedule of the 7th and 22nd of the month has a frequency of 2x/month and a period of 1/2 month. Period describes time per cycle, while frequency describes cycles per unit time. The confusion is because this way of speaking described the period of the pay schedule and not the frequency of the pay schedule, while people aften think in terms of frequency. So add a 'bi' in there and it's 'per two months'.Īdd a 'semi' in there and it means 'per half month'. Now that I'm grown up and most of my money goes toward monthly bills and savings, I like semi-monthly better overall. My checks fund most of the bills, and her checks fund the biweekly 'allowance' which is what we use for all incidentals like personal care, groceries, restaurants, clothes, fuel, etc.Įdit to add: When I was younger and I had no real bills, I liked weekly or biweekly because that aligned with the rhythms of life (work week and weekends). Though I will admit that if you use an 'allowance' system like we do, then it's easier to budget THAT weekly or biweekly.Ĭurrently my wife is biweekly (and as mentioned I'm semimonthly), so we get the best of both worlds. With biweekly, your payday floats in comparison to your bills, so it takes more mental energy to make sure your cash flow stays positive. So I know that my mortgage coming out on the 8th will have fresh money to fund it and we shouldn't ever have any cash flow issues. ![]() Right now I get paid on the 7th and 22nd. Though monthly pay requires budgeting discipline or having savings. I've been on just about every pay schedule as well, and monthly/semimonthly are the only ones that actually align to your bills.
